Discovery of Enhanced Germanium Abundances in Planetary Nebulae with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer

چکیده
We report the discovery of Ge III λ1088.46 in the planetary nebulae (PNe) SwSt 1, BD+303639, NGC 3132, and IC 4593, observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. This is the first astronomical detection of this line and the first measurement of Ge (Z = 32) in PNe. We estimate Ge abundances using S and Fe as reference elements, for a range of assumptions about gas-phase depletions. The results indicate that Ge, which is synthesized in the initial steps of the s-process and therefore can be self-enriched in PNe, is enhanced by factors of ≥ 3 – 10. The strongest evidence for enrichment is seen for PNe with Wolf-Rayet central stars, which are likely to contain heavily processed material. Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud: a Far-uv Spectroscopic Analysis
We observed seven central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), and performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine the stellar and nebular parameters. Most of the objects show wind features, and they have eff...
متن کاملInternational Ultraviolet Explorer satellite observations of seven high-excitation planetary nebulae.
Observations of seven high-excitation planetary nebulae secured with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite were combined with extensive ground-based data to obtain electron densities, gas kinetic temperatures, and ionic concentrations. We then employed a network of theoretical model nebulae to estimate the factors by which observed ionic concentrations must be multiplied to obt...
متن کاملDiscovery of photospheric argon in very hot central stars of planetary nebulae and white dwarfs
Context. We report the first discovery of argon in hot evolved stars and white dwarfs. We have identified the Ar 1063.55 Å line in some of the hottest known (Teff = 95 000−110 000 K) central stars of planetary nebulae and (pre-) white dwarfs of various spectral type. Aims. We determine the argon abundance and compare it to theoretical predictions from stellar evolution theory as well as fro...
متن کاملGermanium Production in Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars: Implications for Observations of Planetary Nebulae
Observations of planetary nebulae (PNe) by Sterling, Dinerstein and Bowers have revealed abundances in the neutron-capture element Germanium (Ge) from solar to factors of 3 – 10 above solar. The enhanced Ge is an indication that the slow-neutron capture process (s process) operated in the parent star during the thermallypulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phase. We compute the detailed nuc...
متن کاملFar-uv Spectroscopic Analyses of Four Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae
We analyze the Far-UV/UV spectra of four central stars of planetary nebulae with strong wind features — NGC 2371, Abell 78, IC 4776 and NGC 1535, and derive their photospheric and wind parameters by modeling high-resolution FUSE (Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) data in the Far-UV and HSTSTIS and IUE data in the UV with spherical non-LTE line-blanketed model atmospheres. Abell 78 is a hy...
